CONTENT WARNING: Multiple Maniacs contains scenes that may be upsetting or triggering to some viewers.
This December at The Royal Cinema, we’re getting down and dirty with a curated selection of some of John Waters most iconic works for a six-part retrospective! Prepare yourself for some of the most downright filthy films ever created, with a video introduction from the Pope of Trash himself!
Our retrospective kicks off with John Waters’ absolutely essential crime-comedy Multiple Maniacs!
Mr. David and Lady Divine are at the helm of the Cavalcade of Perversion, a travelling sideshow act featuring all means of repulsion. Passersby are often reluctant to see a show that boasts someone called the Puke-Eater, so the team often have to drag people into the tent to get any visitors at all. At the finale of every show, Lady Divine comes out and robs all of the guests at gunpoint, but eventually, she becomes bored by the same ol’ song-and-dance, and decides to start murdering people instead. She escapes the first murder scene, and then gets a call from a local bar owner, Edith, who tells her that her boyfriend, Mr. David, has been cheating on her with another woman. What follows is a depraved descent into madness, including glue-sniffers, a giant lobster, and one of the most blasphemous scenes to ever be committed to film. Recently restored and ready for the big screen!
