“Stormy Monday is about the way light falls on wet pavement stones, and about how a neon sign glows in a darkened doorway. It is about the attitudes that men strike when they feel in control of a situation, and the way their shoulders slump when someone else takes power. It is about smoking. It is about cleavage. It is about the look on a man’s face when someone is about to deliberately break his arm, and he knows it. And about the look on a woman’s face when she is waiting for a man she thinks she loves, and he is late, and she fears it is because he is dead.” – Roger Ebert
The feature film debut of Mike Figgis (Internal Affairs, Leaving Las Vegas) takes us to the rough-and-tumble streets of Newcastle, England where a young Sean Bean (still with his original teeth!) searches for work. Landing a menial job as a janitor at the hands of a questionable nightclub owner, played with omniscient sexual bravado by Sting, Bean soon finds himself launched into a dangerous criminal underworld involving a corrupt US politician (Tommy Lee Jones) and a mysterious Femme Fatale (Neon Dreams VIP Melanie Griffith).
STORMY MONDAY is set amongst the backdrop of “American Week”, a festival designed to cement ties between economically-depressed Newcastle and wealthy American investors, which Figgis uses as a deliciously savage device to mock American culture. Oozing with seedy neo-noir goodness and featuring a hypnotizing jazz score composed by Figgis himself, this sexy and intimate thriller will leave you gasping for air. And we’re presenting the way it was meant to be seen, on a (potentially) stormy Monday evening!
This screening and others are made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite. As always this will be a fully licensed event featuring a fabulous on-screen pre-show and great prizes before the film. Be sure to arrive early!
