Royal Stompbox: Heavy Metal Double-Bill – HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT

Summer is here, headbangers! Up the irons, grab your leather and spandex and shred loose with the two greatest docs from the mad, excessive, debauched heavy metal delirium of the 1980s.

7:00pm – 80s Heavy Metal Pre-Show

8:00pm – Metal Double-Bill

HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT (1986)

In 1986, indie filmmakers John Heyn and Jeff Krulik wandered around a Maryland sports arena parking lot with a video camera filming Judas Priest fans in their native habitat. Between copious beers and muscle cars, the Priest disciples put on a show way better than anything going on inside the stadium. Hilarious, endearing, clueless and wonderful, 30+ years later it’s still the best movie ever about rabid rock’n’roll fandom.

THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART II: THE METAL YEARS (1988)

Director Penelope Spheeris (WAYNE’S WORLD) followed up her essential document of the L.A. hardcore/punk scene with this wild probe into the lives of metal, rock and glam bands in a series of candid and often absurd and humiliating interviews, with plenty of loud clothes, hardy partying, and girls, girls, girls. Interspersed are chats with struggling young hopefuls from the crowded L.A. metal scene convinced they are destined for fame & fortune. Standout moments include Ozzy Osbourne cooking breakfast and spilling orange juice, Paul Stanley of Kiss conducting his entire interview on a bed full of women, recently sober Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith talking about snorting all of Peru up their noses, and Chris Holmes from W.A.S.P. floating on a raft in his mom’s swimming pool guzzling a harrowing amount of vodka. A brilliant and alarming snapshot of a time and place so hedonistically far off the charts that Lemmy is the voice of reason (!).

“Heavy metal rules!”

“Paaaarty!”

“Hell yeah!”
